APA Presents - Suśruta's classic Compendium of Medicine: Recovering a medical classic as it was 1000 years ago by Professor Dominik Wujastyk
The horizontal image above is one leaf from 288 surviving folios of a manuscript of The Compendium of Sushruta" (Suśrutasaṃhitā) that are preserved in a library in Kathmandu, Nepal. This manuscript was copied out by a Nepalese scribe in 878 CE, over a thousand years ago. It preserves a much older version of Suśruta's fascinating text than any of the printed editions that circulate today. Studying this ancient Nepalese manuscript allows us to travel back in time and read this classic of Ayurveda in the version that circulated in Nepal and North India a millennium ago and before many parts of the text were altered. This talk will describe a Canadian university project to transcribe, translate and study this manuscript. The project website is sushrutaproject.org.
